Welcome To “La-La”-Land
I’m not an alcoholic, but the first thing that came to my mind when I heard her music was a glass of Jack Daniels on ice. Her harmonious voice on “Get Over It” has a unique mellifluous quality that is simultaneously smokey and smooth, like a midnight jazz bar in downtown New Orleans; and sultry and seductive like a Broadway burlesque club. The raw talent in her burns through your senses like that first gulp of the whiskey coursing through your veins, leaving a warm tingling all over your body.
The face attached to the accolades is Nigerian born, UK based singer/ songwriter Sonya “La-La” Irabor.
Raised in Lagos, her musical teeth were cut at the early age of 5, leading to various musical stints, one of which was a charity event in Lagos at the age of 14.
Her musical style is a raw mixture of motown funk produced with soulful overtones, and like my favourite bartender, she delivers it just how I like it. Straight, no chaser.
Welcome to la-la land.
