Falz The Bahd Guy
The first time I heard the track “Shakara”, I had no idea who did it, but I fell instantly in love with it, as it appealed to a previously unknown inner nature of mine. Flash forward many months into the future, thanks to Gidilounge, I was finally able to put a face and a name to the music, sealing my admiration.
Falz has been steadily making his rounds around the music circuits. His recently released mixtape “Mr. Shakara” plays host to a number of tracks that not only boast of his dexterity as an artist, but also the potential to do so much more in the music scene.
We recently had the opportunity to get in touch with him to get to know him a little better.
Who is Falz?
Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana is the 2nd born of Barrister Falana’s 3 children. I was born in Lagos and went to primary school in lag. Then for secondary school i went to a boarding school in Osun state (Olashore Int. Sch.). I’m currently studying Law at the University of Reading in the UK.
What do you do apart from music?
Well, as I stated earlier I’m still studying at the University, so when I’m not making music I’m going for lectures!
What has it taken to get to where you are now and what hopes do you have for the future?
To get to where I am right now, I’ve been very persistent and determined. I’ve also had to ignore all forms of pessimism along the way and that has been the way forward really!
I still feel like there is a long way to go because of what I aim to achieve. My ambitions are to make music and rub shoulders with the biggest names in the game and also gain worldwide recognition and respect for what I do, but my plan is to take one step at a time. What keeps me going is witnessing other great artists rise to stardom- it just makes me think, if they can do it then why can’t I?
When did you start to develop an interest for music? Who else have you worked with and who do you hope to work with in the future?
I’ve always loved music ever since I was a kid, but the point when I started to gain that particular interest for Rap music was in my 4th yr in Sec Sch. I wrote a few songs with some friends back then that people seemed to enjoy actually and so I just kept writing and writing and getting better with it! Yea there are a few previously recorded tracks that people dont really know about, but what I did on my 1st official mixtape ‘SHAKARA’ was to sorta’ make a compilation of tracks I’ve done since I started recording tracks professionally though I still left some songs out. I’ve mainly worked with other up and coming artists like Chyn, Chykay, Teddy, Sonia, Midnyt, Outta Town, Sho’ Fro’ and many more. I’m also looking to work with more big names in the game soon.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Where do you do most of your recording?
My inspiration comes from different sources really. My music library is quite diverse and I think this shows in the music that I make as I try to mix different sounds so as to have that unique flavour. I do most of my recording in the U.K. but that’s because im based here at the moment. I plan to break into the Naija mainstream entertainment industry cuz I feel my music is more naija-oriented, but right now its just about making that good music and seeing where it takes me. It’s probably best to be under a label that’s in naija cuz thats where my market is really. I havent approached any though, neither have I been approached yet.
Falz is definitely somebody that is setting out in the right direction and should be watched very closely.
