Not too long ago, we posted a video by duo Christian Rich for “Hello Virgin”, a track featured on their recently released mixtape, “The Decadence”, with E! TV’s Clinton Sparks, Jay-Z’s and Lebron James’ DJ Mick Boogie, Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream. The tape includes features from Pharrell Williams, Pusha T of the Clipse, DJ Benzi, Bjorn from Peter, Bjorn and John and others.

Recently, we got the opportunity to speak with them on their creativity, music and links with Pharrell, N.E.R.D. and the Neptunes camp. Here is how it went.

Firstly, what makes up “Christian Rich”? Tell us a little about yourselves and your background?

Christian Rich consist of Tai “Christian” Hassan and Ken “Rich” Hassan. Christian does all the vocals and is the main figure in the group. Rich is the producer, arranger, organizer and co-writer. If this was the show Entourage, Christian would be Vince, Rich would be E (Eric), as Rich takes on more of a background and developmental role.

We started as producers in college attaining platinum plaques for some songs we produced. As the industry changed we refined our music hustle and began writing more records. With a few obstacles out the way we began keeping songs that we wrote for other artist and from there Christian Rich the artist were born. We moved our music via online and hand to hand to consumers and set-up our own shows. From there the industry started to pay attention leading us to the present day and the Neptune camp.

You guys seem to have gone pretty far with your music career at the moment. When did this journey begin and how? Was there ever a period that it transitioned from being a hobby to a career or is it something you guys always looked towards as a career?

We have always done music. We started creating and experimenting with music when we were 10 years old. Coming from Nigeria in 1990’s created a culture shock that we adapted to quickly. When we attended college we started to meet people who heard our creations and wanted to pay for them. I believe it was about our Sophomore year that we realized we could make some real money. I remember our father was confused on how two 18 year old kids were buying $2000 keyboards while in college. We made enough money in college selling beats to buy 2 Benz coupes honestly. But as Senior year came close we started to make our plans on the rest of our lives as music was the main priority.

Now, Pharrell and the Neptunes..how did that happen? That’s a pretty major movement

Our homie Shomi hooked up a meeting with Shae from N.E.R.D. Shae jumped on as management and introduced us to Pharrell, who then introduced us to Diddy, and Jeezy and a slew of others. But the initial meeting with Star Trak came about from N.E.R.D watching our Famous Girl video in London online. They thought we were signed, which was not the case. After they discovered we were free agents they decided to work with us in all aspects of our business.

The depth of creativity, both lyrically and production-wise displayed in “The Decadence” is astounding, to the extent that I’ve heard people say they would have paid to have a copy of it and that it is of album quality. What inspires you to come up with the sounds, lyrics and concepts?

We take our ideas from an array of sounds. We listen to Brazilian Jazz a lot, but also appreciate Electronica music specifically Daft Punk. When we created this album we wanted to not waste time and make hit records that would be played 10 years from now. We know people would have paid for the album and we plan on releasing “The Decadence 2.0″ with revamped versions and more content. But we needed the world to hear us first and be the verdict. They spoke and now we are ready to give you our world. The Decadence or our music is beyond just the sounds. Its the visual stimulation, the performances, the artwork, the collabs, the language, the taste, the fashion…. Its about us. Its about you all understanding how we see the world with the hopes of adding our positive values to your world as well.

In terms of the production, it is said that you do most (if not all) of the production yourselves. Is this something you learned formally or something you picked up along the way?

We actually do all our production. We let our friends do remixes of course but we enjoy creating sounds more than anything. We learned the process of production early on. It was something that was just a past time love, a passion. We cared so much about chord changes, mixes and sounds that we dedicated all our summer work monies to equipment with not intentions of making profit. Did we think we would be here? Absolutely, but the passion is foremost.

I noticed that you use a lot of imagery in your videos, both your Hello Virgin and Famous Girl videos. What is the concept behind both these Videos?

Briefly, Famous Girl is about a world of fame that gets the best of our main character. She enters a world of success, only to lose it all at the end because of greed. Hello Virgin is about the “Hand” representing virginity in life. A baby’s hands are pure until it starts touching things and then it becomes used and damaged due to bacteria. We wanted to use this symbolism to represent virginity in everyday life. Whether its virginity with school, work, relationships or creativity it all as a starting point.

For artists trying to get to where you guys are, what would you advise them to do?

I mean we are still working and learning as well. But I would say just be yourself. Being you comes natural just learn how to market it and keep things simple. Learn from your mistakes as well as others. Most importantly, hustle! The ball is in your court!

Do you guys have any plans for a tour or an album coming out anytime soon?

Well we DJ in New York, Chicago, LA etc so look out for that. We are releasing “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” as a single on iTunes next week and “The Decadence 2.0″ will be on iTunes and in stores by August this year. Go to ChristianRichGoods.com for updates as well as twitter.com/christianrich.

Thanks a million for this opportunity and we wish you the best in your career and hopefully we get to meet if (when) your career ever brings you up to Canada.

After a slight period of silence, Angonemi.Com managed to catch up with MADE Music artist Beazy to have a little one-on-one interview to get a little insight into his life and career, as well as sample some of his recent singles and this is what the result was.

A.C: I hate to use the phrase “up and coming artist ” for someone who already has two mixtapes out with your songs on radio rotation in Nigeria, yet it seems the appropriate word to use would you agree?

Bz: I definitely agree. I guess I’m only going to shake off that tag when I put out videos, drop an album, such and such. Lol. But to be honest, I have no problem whatsoever with it.

A.C: So how long have you been doing this?

Bz: I recorded my first song on the 6th of July, 2005. I was in London at the time and I’ll always remember that day because I spent that night in the studio and by morning, it was pandemonium because the tube had been bombed! I also remember that being the birth of my “underground” phobia. Lol

A.C: Seems like an obvious question, but truth is most of us don’t know, so tell me who is Beazy?

Bz: Well… Before I start, can I just say that I’m terrible when it comes to speaking about myself.

Anyway, my real or government name is Afolabi Durotoye and I’m from Ekiti State. As I said earlier, I’ve been rapping for five years and in that time I have recorded over 200 songs and, I say this with all humility, have become really really good at it. lol

And if you haven’t heard of me, it is quite understandable because I chose to take the slow route to the top. I needed to be sure that when I did come out, I’d be the best at what I do. I feel like I’m at such a place right now and so you can expect to be seeing a whole lot more of me in the very near future.

Oh yeah, I just signed with MADE Music. )

A.C: When exactly did you know Rap was what you wanted to do for sure and no longer just a hobby?

Bz: To be honest, I knew it the moment I began recording my first song in 2005

A.C: I have heard that you do live performances with a live band. Not only is that very unique, it is reminiscent of “The Roots”. What made you think you could pull it off and how awesome has that been for you.

Bz: Well.. I don’t do all my shows with a band. I just really like to. And to be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure I could pull it off at first, but as soon as rehearsals began, it just felt right. As far as awesomeness is concerned, on a scale of 1 to 10, it’s a definite 12. Lol

A.C: On your first mixtape, most every song was with original production & instrumentals and with your 2nd mixtape you used other artists instrumentals, why is that?

Bz: The “first” mixtape “Get Money Stay Fly”, is actually my second and on that one, I did what I love to do, which is make music and push boundaries. I did a lot of “singing” and there are quite a few “unrapper-like” (lol) songs on there as well. It got a lot of positive response from the female audience which led to “rap heads” saying stuff like “yeah he can make songs but he’s just an alright rapper”. Now this pissed me off to no end and so I decided to make the third mixtape, “The Affidavit”. And with that, I’m confident I proved I’m not only a good rapper, but am infact the best in the country, if not continent.

A.C: Now that you are signed to a record label, what are the expectations set b4 u? Is there added pressure to produce music or is it d same as being an independent artist?

Bz: No pressure what so ever. The work I put in earlier has made sure of that. I currently have more than 200 recorded songs and counting so neither MADE Music nor I is really going to have a problem in that respect.

A.C: What motivates your song choices/lyrics? Do you usually get the beat and then write a song or vice versa?

Bz: It’s always the beat first. I believe if you listen hard enough, you’ll find that every beat carries with it an emotion and a phrase. The emotion influences the lyrics and how they’re delivered and the phrase influences the topic. 9 times out of 10, I can name a song before I write it. I usually do in fact.

A.C: What do you think makes you stand out from others?

Bz: My work ethic, attention to detail and my insecurities. People often think being insecure is a character flaw. Personally, I think they couldn’t be more wrong. The only thing that keeps me progressing as an artist and individual is the fact that I never think I’m good enough. So everyday I wake thinking of how to better myself. It’s a tough punishing road to take, but I honestly do believe it pays off.

Oh, and being stubborn helps as well. If it feels right, it is right. I always stick to my guns. Lol.

A.C: Any anecdotes of your best & worst experiences so far?

Bz: Way too many good and bad ones. None jump out at me at the moment.

A.C: Is there a particular audience you intend to cater to? How do you intend to relate to any1 outside of that audience…please note that if you say everyone then part b is, how do you intend to relate to everyone?

Bz: Well I very much intend to relate to everyone. I think the best way to do that is to make all sorts of songs. I personally I hate the idea of genres. I really like to mix it up.

But the truth is, no one person can appeal to everyone, no matter what you do. So I’ll just keep making good music and hopefully get as many folks on my back as I can along the way.

A.C: What does the future hold? An album, a video maybe? What and when should we be expecting something new from you?

Bz: I should be dropping an album by december and a mixtape or two before then. You can also expect a few videos.

A.C: Thank you for this opportunity I appreciate it, and wish you loads of success. Looking forward to seeing you become great, in Nigeria and Internationally as well.

Bz: You’re most welcome but I believe it is I who ought to be thanking you for listening to me go on and on. Lol
